FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
CONCORDIA WELCOMES THE DETROIT PUPPET THEATRE FOR "THE CRANE MAIDEN"
ANN ARBOR, Mich., March 24, 2008 – Concordia University—Ann Arbor (CUAA) welcomes the Detroit Puppet Theatre—PuppetART group, for a performance of “The Crain Maiden.” The show will begin at 4:00 p.m. in the Kreft Center Black Box Theatre on April 27.
“The Crane Maiden” is based on the ancient Japanese folktale of a poor but honest young man who saves the life of a wounded crane. The crane turns out to be a young beautiful woman with whom he falls in love. Out of gratitude, the crane maiden bestows upon him a fabric woven from crane feathers, which becomes a source of temptation in the hands of his rich and corrupt merchant neighbor. Tempting the young man to sell the fabric, the merchant makes him break the promise that he made to the girl. As a result, she becomes a crane again and flies away. The performance includes live actors in traditional Japanese costumes and masks, who literally manipulate the main characters, string puppets known as marionettes. Founded in 1998 by a group of puppeteers and artists trained in the former Soviet Union, all members of the PuppetART troupe are masters of puppetry art theater.
Advance Tickets for the show are for general admission, for seniors, for children and students.
