FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
ANN ARBOR, MI - The Board of Regents of Concordia University (Ann Arbor) recently named Dr. Timothy Frusti of Jackson, Michigan, as Dean of its School of Education. Frusti, who has served Concordia as assistant professor of education since 1996, was a leader in the university’s successful efforts to redesign its teacher preparation programs, leading to national recognition and accreditation by the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).
In his new role, Frusti has been asked by Concordia’s president, Dr. James Koerschen, to guide the School of Education’s efforts to build on its successes by significantly increasing enrollment in both its traditional four-year programs and its certification track for candidates holding Bachelors degrees. His primary goal, Frusti states, is to “help ensure that Concordia prepares teachers who truly reflect the School of Education’s vision of ‘Servant Leaders, Reflective Practitioners, and Life-long Learners.’” In particular, he believes this means the mentoring of teacher candidates who “recognize and respect the gifts God has given to all students and who encourage students to develop and use those gifts to serve to others.”
Frusti earned his Ph.D. in Curriculum, Teaching and Educational Policy from Michigan State University in 2001, focusing his research on the history and changing roles of church-founded colleges, such as Concordia. Prior to the start of his doctoral studies, he spent 16 years teaching in Lutheran elementary schools. He holds a Masters of Arts in Middle School Education from Eastern Michigan University.
Dr. Frusti has been published in a variety of religious education curriculums, most recently authoring several lessons for a junior high religion series published by Concordia Publishing House. He is currently writing a textbook for Concordia Publishing on “the Lutheran principles of reading and interpreting the Bible, in light of modern literacy theories.” The book is scheduled for publication in 2004.
Earlier this year, Frusti received the university’s Faculty Recognition Award for Campus Leadership and Teaching Excellence. He has been listed both in Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers and in Who’s Who Among America’s Students.
Frusti’s appointment fills a vacancy created when Dr. Gayle Grotjan, Dean of Concordia’s School of Education since 1997, accepted a position with the Detroit-based Lutheran Special Education Ministries. In her new role, Dr. Grotjan will direct the creation of special education resources for Lutheran and Christian schools across the state of Texas. Dr. Grotjan began her new duties October 1.
