ANN ARBOR, MI - Grammy nominated jazz trumpeter, Terence Blanchard, American Book Award winning poet and noted music journalist, Quincy Troupe, art gallery owner, George N’Namdi and many others will converge on Concordia University’s campus this February for the Visiting Artist Series, "Jazz and...". The event will feature a series of lectures, workshops, performances and an art exhibit all focusing on jazz and it’s correlations to film, poetry, dance and art.
Terence Blanchard and his quintet headline the event with two concerts on Sunday, February 2nd at 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. in the Kreft Center Black Box Theatre.
Born in New Orleans, Blanchard began playing piano at age 5 and took up the trumpet at age 14. He studied at the New Orleans Center for Creative Study before going on to Rutgers University. Time magazine says "few can match Blanchard’s precision and flair in evoking emotion. He has developed an expressive style reminiscent of the mid-1960’s Miles Davis" (1994). Blanchard has also composed the scores for over 30 motion pictures and many of Spike Lees films such as Malcolm X (Warner Brothers, 1993) and Summer of Sam (Touchstone/Disney, 1999). He has received several Grammy nominations including Best Jazz Instrumental Solo for his most recent albums, Let’s Get Lost (Sony Classical, 2001) and Wandering Moon (Sony Classical, 2000). He was also named Down Beat magazine’s 2000 Jazz Artist of the Year.
Blanchard will join his friend and poet, Quincy Troupe for a lecture on Jazz and Film on Monday, February 3 at 4 p.m. in the lower level of the Student Union. Troupe will read from his works in a workshop on Jazz and Poetry at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, February 4 in the lower level of the Student Union.
Troupe grew up in St. Louis and attended Grambling College. He is the author of over thirteen books, including six volumes of poetry and is the recipient for two American Book Awards in poetry for his collection Snake- Back Solos (Reed and Cannon, 1990) and in non-fiction for
Miles: The Autobiography (Simon & Schuster, 1989). In 1991 Troupe received the prestigious Peabody Award for co-producing and writing the radio series, The Miles Davis Radio Project broadcast in seven parts in 1990 and aired on National Public Radio. He currently teaches Creative Writing and American and Caribbean Literature at the University of California, San Diego. Troupe also wrote the liner notes for Terence Blanchard’s first CD.
Gregory Patterson and members of the premier Eisenhower Dance Ensemble will hold a lecture/workshop/performance on Jazz and Dance at 2 p.m. on Saturday, February 1 in the Kreft Center Black Box Theatre. Patterson is the founding member and assistant director of the Eisenhower Dance Ensemble of Michigan and is an associate professor of dance at Oakland University.
Rounding out the schedule of events is an exhibition of works by Vincent D. Smith running January 24 through March 9 in the Kreft Center Gallery. George N’Namdi will present a lecture on "Jazz and the Visual Arts: The Paintings of Vincent D. Smith" at the opening reception on Friday, January 24 at 7 p.m. N’Namdi is the owner of G.R. N’Namdi Galleries in Detroit and Chicago which are quickly becoming a byword for the most compelling African-American art.
The Visiting Artist Series at Concordia University was created to provide students and the surrounding community with opportunities for conversations, workshops and master classes with men and women working on the highest level of artistic accomplishment.
The Terence Blanchard concerts on February 2 at 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. are in the Kreft Center Black Box Theatre. Tickets are and can be obtained beginning January 6th through the Kreft Center Box Office at 734.995.4612. Box Office hours are Monday-Friday, noon - 4 p.m. All other events are free.
