2004-2005 Concordia University Theatre Season
George Washington Slept Here
October 14-16, 2004
The season opens with “George Washington Slept Here” by Moss Hart and George S. Kaufman. Newton Fuller, tired of the life of a New York City apartment dweller, purchases a dilapidated Pennsylvania farmhouse where George Washington supposedly once spent the night. The purchase comes as an unwelcome surprise to his wife Annabelle. Soon the entire family is in for a whole series of unwelcome surprises as they learn that the real estate agent neglected to mention a number of serious problems with the property. Add Newton’s annoying Uncle Stanley and Annabelle’s despicable nephew Raymond to the mix, not to mention a cow in the kitchen, a philandering actor, a house full of weekend guests and you have a recipe for an evening full of laughs. “George Washington Slept Here” runs October 14 and 15 at 8:00 p.m. and October 16 at 2:00 and 8:00 p.m.
Moon Over Buffalo
February 17-20, 2005
Next in the season is Ken Ludwig’s Tony Award-nominated “Moon Over Buffalo,” a hilarious farce set backstage and onstage at the Erlanger Theatre in Buffalo, New York. It’s 1953 and George and Charlotte Hay are the fading stars and owners of a financially troubled touring company performing “Private Lives” and “Cyrano de Bergerac” (with a cast of five) in repertory. Their daughter, Rosalind, wants nothing more to do with the vagabond theatrical life. But, when a marital spat between her parents coincides with an opportunity for them to make it big in Hollywood, confusion and mayhem take the stage with side-splitting results. (Features mild adult humor) “Moon Over Buffalo” runs February 17-19 at 8:00 p.m. and February 20 at 2:30 p.m.
Arms and the Man
April 21-24, 2005
Rounding out the season is “Arms and the Man” by George Bernard Shaw. Shaw described Arms and the Man as romantic comedy but designed it to explode romantic notions of love and war. Young Raina is engaged to the soldier Sergius. The very evening that Raina learns that Sergius is the hero of a thrilling cavalry charge against the enemy Serbs, Captain Bluntschli, a mercenary working for the Serbs, takes refuge in her bedchamber. Sparks fly as Captain Bluntschli challenges all of Raina’s romantic preconceptions about love, honor, duty, and war. “Arms and the Man” runs April 21-23 at 8:00 p.m. and April 24 at 2:30 p.m.
