Ann Arbor, MI/December 11, 2003 - The Kreft Center Gallery at Concordia University in Ann Arbor, Michigan will host an exhibition of paintings and drawings by Antonio Carreño. The show runs January 20 through February 27, 2004, with an opening reception on Friday, January 23, 7:00-9:00pm. The opening reception will include a lecture/presentation by Carreño at 8PM, Jan. 23 in the lecture room adjacent to the gallery.
This exhibition will include works on paper and canvas done by Antonio Carreño over the past decade. Carreño’s works of abstract imagery have been likened to Miró, Chagall and Norman Lewis. He studied at the National School of Fine Arts in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, where he was born and raised. He later studied at the Art Student League in New York, NY. His works are in collections around North America, including the Latin American Museum of Modern Art in Washington, D.C., the National Museum of Art, Santo Domingo, Dominican
Republic, Dillard University, New Orleans, LA and the Arizona State University Art Museum.
Carreño reflects surrealist influences in his abstract works of unearthly color, unsituated space and transparent, ephemeral subjects. His images equivocate between a sensual and concrete exploration of texture and a transcendental world of floating forms and ethereal spaces. This paradoxical phenomenology suspends the viewer in a position between reality and illusion.
The exhibition of approximately 15 drawings and paintings offers moments of aesthetic appreciation for Antonio’s use of line, color and surface, as well as potential psychological reflection as one transcends beyond the surface into Carreño’s illusory realm of space and imagery.
The Kreft Center Gallery is located at 4090 Geddes Road on the campus of Concordia University in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Friday 12:00 to 4:00, Saturday and Sunday 1:00 to 5:00. For more information contact the gallery at 734-995-7591 or kreftgallery@cuaa.edu.
