FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Ann Arbor, MI/March 3, 2004 - Concordia University Theatre will finish its 2003-04 season with Trial by Jury, an early Gilbert and Sullivan one-act and a companion piece titled The Farce of the Worthy Master Pierre Patelin, running April 22-25 in the Kreft Center Black Box Theatre.
In Trial by Jury, the jilted bride, Angelina (Julie R. Kunze), is suing her ex-fiancé Edwin (Dan Kinney) for a breach of promise. Edwin has found a new love and has broken off his engagement to Angelina. Despite pledges of objectivity, the Jury seems to side most strongly with the beautiful jilted bride. Can Edwin receive a fair trial? Join our Learned Judge (Daniel Stauffer), with a shady past of his own, as he presides over this musical spoof of Victorian English justice. Rounding out the cast are Concordia students Kelly Smith, Matt Cahill, Joshua D. Meyer, Kevin C. Ackerman, Ryan D. Beffrey, Jon Boerger, Aaron Roggow, Ben Schinkel, Jaclyn Eilers, Adrienne Beyersdorf, Becca Dancy, Jessica Selbe, Karilyn Warsinski, Ashlea Weston, Amber Click, Sarah Couet, Kristy Petzold, Pamela Rellstab, and Angela Schallhorn.
Trial by Jury first opened at the Royalty Theatre on March 25, 1875, as an after-piece to follow Offenbach’s La Perichole and ran for 300 performances. It is the only work by Gilbert and Sullivan that is entirely sung with no spoken dialogue.
As a companion piece Concordia Theatre will present an anonymous French farce of the 15th century entitled The Farce of the Worthy Master Pierre Patelin. It is the story of a con man turned lawyer, who cheats anyone he can, until at last he finds himself in a situation even he can’t wriggle out of. Director, Laura Bird, comments that “a 15th century French farce and a 19th century English operetta make an unusual combination, but the spirit of the two pieces is remarkably similar. The law and lawyers have been objects of ridicule since their very invention.”
Trial by Jury is directed and designed by Laura C. Bird with musical direction by Brian Altevogt and runs Thursday, Friday and Saturday, April 22, 23 and 24 at 8pm and Sunday, April 25 at 2:30pm. Tickets are and can be purchased through the Kreft Center Box Office. Hours are Monday-Friday from 12-4pm. Call 734.995.4612 to charge by phone. All performances are in the Kreft Center Black Box Theatre on the campus of Concordia University at 4090 Geddes Road just west of US 23 in Ann Arbor, MI.
