Concordia University presents its annual Boar's Head Festival in early December in the Chapel of the Holy Trinity at Concordia University. Students, faculty and staff come together to enact medieval Christmas traditions and the story of Christ's birth in this moving musical spectacle with musical direction by Prof. Brian Altevogt.
In 1978, three professors - Dr. Paul Foelber, John Sturmfels and Quentin Marino brought the Boar's Head Festival to Concordia. Its origins lie in medieval where a wild boar was often killed and served during the Christmas season. The death of the beast came to symbolize Christ's victory over sin and evil in the world. The festival was presented for centuries at Cambridge and Oxford Universities before being brought to the United States. Through the years, the Christian Church has transformed the symbolic festival into a service of praise in celebration of the Nativity.
