Vaudeville was a long-lived and fascinating player on the American stage. How was it organized? What was its place in American popular culture from the 1890s into the 1930s? What variety of fare did it offer? Professor Woods discusses his recent book, “Transatlantic Stage Stars in Vaudeville and Variety,” and work in progress on “Vaudevillized: The Business of Culture in the Age of Monopoly.” In both, he measures vaudeville against the efforts of famous actors who entered there, and deals with the experiences of particular actors and of the audiences who watched them.

“Mothers raise their daughters and love their sons,” is an old adage that has been around in the African-American community for years. With the release of movies like “Boyz In The Hood” and “Menace to Society”, this adage has grown in popularity in the African-American community and has often been used to explain the ills facing many young African-American men. For any African-American mother who has believed this adage to be true, comes a compelling book of wisdom, inspiration and hope that’s bound to prove differently. Kim Crouch will discuss her recent book, “Mother to Son,” a powerfully written work that shows that mothers do more than love their sons. The author offers candid advice for her sons on the issues they may face from racism to self-recognition.
