American composer, Michael Daugherty, discussed his music and its relation to the power of the American icons that generates so much of its energy. “From Desi and Bizarro for orchestral winds, Motown Metal for brass ensemble, Timbuktuba for euphoniums, tubas , and percussion, and UFO, Rosa Parks Boulevard and Red Cape Tango for symphonic winds, Daugherty's connection to the pop world infuses his work at every level.“

Award-winning author Bonnie Jo Campbell read from and discussed her latest collection of short stories, American Salvage. At once finely observed and powerfully imagined, these stories are set in small towns and rural outposts of Michigan, chronicling American lives and the way we live now.
American Salvage is a finalist for the 2009 National Book Award.
