The Music Participation Scholarship is a $2,000 scholarship available to students of any major desiring to join one of the Concordia choirs, the Wind Ensemble, or String Ensemble.

Music Participation Application

How do I audition for the Music Participation Scholarship?

To audition, prepare a single selection (any genre or style) to showcase musical ability.

  • Students must provide a letter of recommendation at the time of the audition, speaking towards their musical abilities.
  • Unless marked unaccompanied, students must bring in piano parts and perform their selections with accompanists. The Music Department will provide an accompanist for all auditioning students.

A music theory proficiency test will be given at the time of the audition. Students who score 80% or higher will be exempt from the requirement to enroll in MUS 105: Music Fundamentals.

Video/internet auditions may be accepted on a case-by-case basis provided that they are received by the music department prior to the final audition date. Students wishing to audition via video must receive approval from the scholarship coordinator in advance of submitting a video audition.

Supplemental Scholarships

Additional Supplemental Scholarships of $2,000 are available. Supplemental Scholarships are scholarships that may be “added on” to an existing scholarship, giving interested students an increased financial award from the music department.  Students must audition for either a Music Merit or Participation scholarship to be eligible for a supplemental scholarship. These scholarships are designed for students with a specific interest in one of the following areas:

  • The Pep Band Scholarship is available to students who wish to be in the Concordia Pep Band or Drum Line. Students receiving this scholarship make a commitment to participate in a pre-season band camp, and play with the Pep Band or Drum Line at home football games and basketball games.
  • The Worship Arts Scholarship is available to students who wish to participate in a Worship Arts Ensemble. The Worship Arts ensembles rehearse once a week and perform regularly in chapel. Students interested in this scholarship also agree to minor in either Contemporary Christian Music or Worship Arts Leadership.
  • The Musical Theater Scholarship is available to students with an interest in musical theater. Students receiving this scholarship agree to participate in the annual Boar’s Head Festival and audition for the Spring Musical each spring.

2016-2017 Audition Dates

Auditions occur on the following dates:

  • Saturday, November 12, 2016
  • Saturday, February 11, 2017
  • Saturday, February 25, 2017

Students who apply to the University during Spring 2017 who wish to audition for a Music Scholarship will have a 30 day window from the date of application in which to schedule and complete an audition, if this date falls after February 25. Students who do not complete the audition within this window will not be eligible for a Music Scholarship.

What are the stipulations of the scholarships?

For all music scholarships, as basis for continuing to receive the scholarship, the student agrees to:

  • Take private lessons each semester attending Concordia, on the instrument on which they auditioned.
  • Enroll in a major ensemble (a Concordia choir, Wind Ensemble, or String Ensemble) on the instrument on which they auditioned for their scholarship (where applicable).
  • Maintain a cumulative 2.5 GPA, and maintain a grade of “B-“ or higher in all required music courses.
  • Theory Requirement: Because we want to facilitate a life-long enjoyment of music performance, the CUAA Music Department expects all student musicians to achieve a basic proficiency in music reading and understanding.  Music scholarship recipients must pass a music proficiency test (presented at the audition) or successfully complete the Music Fundamentals (MUS 105) course (C or higher) by the end of their first year.
