Leon Tolchinsky, a young schoolteacher, arrives in a town whose villagers have been cursed with stupidity for 200 years, and he must find a way to free them. But if he stays over 24 hours and fails to break the curse, then he, too, becomes stupid. To complicate matters, he has fallen in love with a village girl so stupid that she has only recently learned to sit down.
