The Michigan Lighthouse Landmark Legacy Project*

William Lucas, trumpeter with the Detroit Symphony, and Kristin Kuster, chair of composition at The University of Michigan School of Music, present an audio-video preview of their collaboration on a new opera based on the rich history of Michigan lighthouses.

Sunday, February 25, 4:00pm
Chapel of the Holy Trinity

Mr. Lucas is a member of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra trumpet section since May 1988 and also a faculty member at The University of Michigan School of Music. An active member of the freelance, jazz, and chamber music communities in metropolitan Detroit, Lucas has appeared as a jazz soloist in many popular jazz clubs and nightspots in Vail Colorado as well as the Detroit and Montreux Jazz Festivals. Lucas’s arrangements for brass have been performed by a number of symphony orchestras. He has been featured as the author of several trumpet pedagogy articles in the International Trumpet Guild's ITG Journal. Composer Kristin Kuster "writes commandingly for the orchestra," and her music "has an invitingly tart edge" (The New York Times). Kuster's compositions take inspiration from architectural space, the weather, and mythology. Her orchestral music "unquestionably demonstrates her expertise in crafting unique timbres" (Steve Smith, Night after Night). She is currently associate professor and chair of the department of composition at The University of Michigan School of Music.
