The English as a Second Language program at CUAA will focus on the acquisition of the knowledge and skills necessary for addressing the needs of limited English proficient (LEP) students in grades K-12. Candidates will apply knowledge in classroom situations beginning with the understanding of different cultures, and moving to a deeper learning of English linguistics and grammar. Candidates will learn research based assessments and best practices in instruction. Instructors with extensive experience in the field of ESL will work closely with candidates to ensure that they have the proficiency to make an immediate impact in the school communities they serve.”

  • The English as a Second Language endorsement program is a 21-credit ( 7 eight week) program which can be completed in 12 months, for K-12 educators who are interested in obtaining the Michigan Endorsement in the area of English as a Second Language (NS).
  • The program is offered in a cohort format with classes meeting either on campus or in a local school district or delivered in an online format.
  • Completed courses can be applied toward professional teacher certification in Michigan. Courses are approved as part of a planned program.
  • The Observation, Analysis and Practicum course can be completed in the current teaching assignment if certain requirements are met.


CUAA’s Early Childhood Education program is certified through the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC).

Student Organizations

The Early Childhood Society is an active student group you are welcome to explore. We do service projects every year and offer a way to get to know your fellow students outside of class.
