David P. Stechholz 

The  Rev. Dr. David P. Stechholz, a 4th generation Lutheran Pastor, born near Buffalo, NY, graduated from Valparaiso University with a B. A. in 1970 and from American University in Washington D.C. with an M.A. in 1972.  He worked both for the Environmental Protection Agency and as a Minister of Music at Lutheran Church of St. Andrew in Silver Spring, MD, before going into the Seminary in 1974.  He graduated from Concordia Theological Seminary, Fort Wayne, Indiana in 1978 with an M.Div.  Before accepting a call to California, he did doctoral coursework at Duquesne University in Pittsburg, PA, as well as additional coursework from CTS.  He was given the English District’s honorary Doctor of Divinity award in 2008.

David Stechholz and Janet (nee Kaminske), a graduate of both CUAA and CUC at River Forest have been married 39 years.  They have been blessed with three wonderful, deeply –committed Christian children. Andrew, who lives with them, Mary (and Joseph) Bliss of New Lenox, IL and Sarah (and A.J.) Philips of Salt Lake City, UT.  Mary and Sarah are Lutheran school teachers like their mom! David and Janet have two grandchildren, Mia and Logan Bliss.

Ordained in 1978 Bishop Stechholz served in the parish ministry 28 ½ years at Redeemer, Oakmont, PA; Messiah, Danville, CA; and West Portal, San Francisco.  He has served on the English District Board of Directors since 1988 and as Western Regional Vice President (1994-1997) and District Secretary (2000 – 2006), as well as District Convention Organist (1980-2006).  He was elected President and Bishop of the English District in June 2006 and re-elected in 2009 and 2012.

He has served on the prior Board of Regents and current Michigan Committee of Overseers of Concordia University- Ann Arbor since 2008, working eagerly to promote CUAA throughout Synod, our region, and the English District.  Besides being a voracious reader and author, he enjoys gardening, walks with his wife, travel, sports and Rotary (37 year member).
