--WHAT ARE THE SUMMER INSTITUTE WORKSHOPS?--

Presented by Concordia University Ann Arbor's School of Education, the Summer Institute is a professional development experience offered at Concordia University Ann Arbor.

Each session is led by a highly qualified industry expert, and SCECH credits are offered upon the completion of each program. Teachers leave refreshed, equipped, and inspired for the upcoming school year. Lunch and materials provided.

Marty Chaffee: Resilient Teachers
July 29-30 | 8:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. | The Black Box | $125

Resilient teachers must clarify their authentic identity in order to have the agency, voice and power to imagine a hopeful and equitable future. In this highly interactive two-day professional learning offering, participants will:
- Explore their own authentic identities
- Foster specific knowledge, skills and dispositions that support the ability to thrive, not just survive
- Develop reflective and meditative practices which cultivate resilience
- Design a plan to transform their classrooms into places where children have agency, voice and power

Jay Marks: The Culturally Competent Teacher
August 12-13 | 8:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. | North Building 320 | $125

This interactive professional learning experience will provide participants with an opportunity to develop the knowledge, understanding and skills necessary to teach students from diverse backgrounds (i.e. race, ethnicity, gender, language, sexual orientation, religion, SES, etc). Areas of focus will include:
- Self-reflection and awareness
- Knowing your students' culture
- Creating a culturally responsive learning environment that promotes diversity, equity and inclusion

Matthew Bergholt: Virtual & Augmented Reality in the Classroom
August 19 or 20 | 8:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. | North Building 320 | $75

In this interactive and hands-on day of professional learning, participants will:
- Gain understanding of the differences between Augmented & Virtual Reality
- Interact with current examples of AR and VR technology
- Create their own VR and AR layer
- Develop an understanding of the role of AR and VR in educational setting
- Apply their learning to their specific roles through the development of classroom activities and lesson plans
