Direct PLUS loans

Federal PLUS loans enable PARENTS of dependent students to borrow funds to help pay for their child's college education. It may be used as a supplement to a Direct Loan.

The PLUS loan is a credit-based loan. Parents may be denied based upon adverse credit histories. If the application is DENIED, the student becomes eligible to borrow additional unsubsidized Loan funds ($4000 for Freshmen & Sophomores, $5000 for Juniors and Seniors).

The maximum PLUS loan eligibility dollar amount, for a school year, is calculated by:
Student's Total Cost of Attendance - Financial Aid = Max Loan eligibility $

Parents can apply for a PLUS loan online at studentaid.gov. When applying for a PLUS loan online please make sure to send the loan to the school code: 003842 which is the code for the main campus in Wisconsin. A paper form can be printed off by clicking here.

Alternative loans

Alternative loans are private student loans from a lending institution that is not part of federal government programs. Alternative loans can be more expensive than federal government guaranteed loans and should only be used when all other options have been exhausted. Research all possibilities for scholarships, grants, work-study, and federal loan programs before borrowing from an alternative loan lender. Choose the loan that best suits your needs and remember to borrow only what you need.
